1. General

  1. The organiser of the ASX Sharemarket Game ('Game') is ASX Operations Pty Limited ABN 42 004 523 782 ('ASXO') 20 Bridge Street, Sydney 2000, a fully owned subsidiary of ASX Limited (ASX).
  2. Participation in the Game is subject to compliance with the General Conditions of the ASX website located at www.asx.com.au, and the Game Rules. Participants should familiarise themselves with these Game Rules prior to making an application to participate in the Game. Any person who completes and submits an online registration form for the Game located at www.asx.com.au/smg ('Game Website') is deemed to accept the Game Rules, and will be bound accordingly.
  3. ASXO reserves the right to amend the Game Rules at any time without notice if it considers an amendment to be reasonably necessary for the fair and efficient operation of the Game. 
  4. Participants acknowledge that:
    a) The Game is provided for information and educational purposes only;
    b) Any information supplied by the ASX Group in relation to the Game applies only to this Game, and such information does not constitute financial advice or recommendation of any financial products by the ASX Group and that participants should consider obtaining independent advice from an Australian financial services licensee before making any financial decision;
    c) The Game Rules do not necessarily correspond with the actual trading requirements of the ASX market, or any other securities market, or any securities regulatory authorities in Australia or elsewhere; and
    d) The order queuing, order matching and other trading processes used in the Game do not necessarily correspond with the actual ASX Trade market, or any other securities market.
  5. Whilst every care has been taken in producing information in relation to the Game, neither ASXO, ASX, nor any of the related bodies corporate of ASX (the 'ASX Group') give any representation or warranty as to the reliability, accuracy, or completeness of the information. To the extent permitted by law, the ASX Group and its employees, officers, agents and contractors are not liable for any loss or damage arising in any way (including by way of negligence) from or in connection with any information provided or omitted or from any person acting or refraining to act in reliance on this information. The ASX Group is not liable in any way for errors contained in information posted by users or Game administrators.
  6. The ASX Group is not responsible or liable for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers or providers, computer equipment or software including but not limited to failure of participants' emails on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the internet or at any website or combination thereof, including injury or damage to a participant's or to any other person's computer related to or resulting from participating in, or downloading materials in relation to the Game, or a participant's inability, difficulty or failure to access any electronic site.
  7. If, for any reason, the Game is not capable of running as planned, including without limitation, by reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the ASX Group, which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Game, ASXO reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Game and/or access to the Game at any time by giving notice of such cancellation, termination, modification or suspension on the ASX website.
  8. Participants release and hold harmless the ASX Group and their directors, officers, employees and agents from any and all liability for any injuries, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the Game and/or any prize(s) won.

2. Eligible participants

  1. The Game is open to all individual persons aged 18 years or over. The following persons may participate in the Game but are not eligible for prizes: a) Employees of the ASX Group and their families; and b) Any person who is employed by an organisation that trades, advises on, or manages financial products trading on a financial market.
  2. To be eligible for the University Individual prize, university participants must register using a valid university email address and must be registered as a student for the duration of the Game.
  3. There is a limit of one (1) Game entry per person in the Game. Any person who registers or attempts to register more than one (1) entry in the Game will be in breach of the Game Rules and may be ineligible for a prize.
  4. ASX reserves the right to limit the number of participants in the Game. If ASX exercises this right, a message will appear on the Game Website advising that no more entries will be accepted.
  5. ASXO has the right to extend or shorten the registration period of the Game by giving notice of any such extension or shortening on the Game Website.

3. Registration

  1. Registration for the Game is free. Registration opens 8 February 2024.
  2. Persons wishing to participate in the Game must complete and submit the online registration form to ASXO. The online registration form is the only way of entering the Game and can be accessed via the Investor Portal login in (www.asx.com.au top right hand side corner). The ASX Group accepts no responsibility or liability for incomplete, lost, late, corrupted, misdirected, misplaced or destroyed online registration forms, nor for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or unauthorised access to, or alteration of online registration forms, howsoever caused.
  3. All entries are subject to final acceptance by the ASX Sharemarket Game Coordinator ('Game Coordinator'). 
  4. ASXO may, at any time, deny entry or suspend access to the Game, or disqualify a participant from the Game if ASXO:    
    a) is unable to contact the participant who has submitted the online registration form; 
    b) believes or suspects that the online registration form has been, or is submitted by a person other than the person indicated on the online registration form, and such person intends to, or has been, participating in the Game under that false or misleading identity; or
    c) believes or suspects that any participant has, or intends to, allowed another person to join the Game using that participant's Trading Account 
  5. Participants must choose a name ('User Name') to identify them within the Game. User Names are restricted to 20 alphanumeric characters, spaces and dashes allowed. Other symbols or special characters will not be accepted.
  6. User Names and league names must not:
    a) be offensive, defamatory, discriminatory;
    b) interfere with a trade mark or other intellectual property right of the ASX Group or any third party;
    c) indicate a web or email address; or
    d) be likely to cause conflict. 
  7. The Game Coordinator may, in its sole discretion, deem a User Name or league name to be unacceptable. In the event of a User Name or league name being deemed unacceptable, the Game Coordinator will change the name.

4. Participating in the Game

  1. The first day of trading in the Game is 7 March 2024 and the last day of trading is 5 September 2024 ('Game Period'). These dates are subject to change without notice.
  2. Participants are solely responsible for all acts and omissions that occur under their username and password ('Trading Account'). Unauthorised use of another participant's Trading Account is a breach of the Game Rules and will result in that participant's automatic disqualification from the Game.
  3. The ASX Group accepts no responsibility for any transactions resulting from unauthorised access to the Trading Account of any participant, and accepts no liability for any loss, injury or damage resulting from the unauthorised use of a participant's Trading Account. Participants agree to notify ASXO immediately if any unauthorised use of a Trading Account is detected or any other breach of security occurs.
  4. Without limitation, ASXO also reserves the right to refuse entry to the Game or disqualify any participant(s) without notice where ASXO has reasonable grounds to suspect a participant has:
    a) tampered with the entry process, the operation of the Game, the ASX website, or the Game Website;
    b) engaged in practices which, in the sole opinion of ASXO, subverts or is intended to subvert the Game Rules;
    c) breached the Game Rules;
    d) engaged in trading that could violate rules against insider trading, or market manipulation and/or any other unlawful trading;
    e) engaged in any other conduct which, in the sole opinion of ASXO, is deemed to be contrary to, or in breach of, the informative, educational and competitive spirit of the Game; or
    f) engaged in abusive communications with the Game Coordinator. 
  5. Participants acknowledge that the ASX Group may use information arising out of the Game, and may pass on the information to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, or any other regulatory or supervisory authority for regulatory and/or supervisory purposes.
  6. Participants acknowledge and agree that, during the Game Period, ASXO may: 
    a) publish on the Game website or at any other location, and/or share with third parties, details of selected participants of the Game (for example, the winners of the most improved portfolio monthly prize) including the participant's User Name, geographic location, Game portfolio and transactions; and
    b) promote the Game through the publication of these details, including on social networking sites such as X, Facebook, Instagram and other similar sites.
  7. Participants consent to receiving newsletters and other information in electronic or other format, in relation to the Game from the ASX Group or from any third party on behalf of the ASX Group. Participants acknowledge that the newsletters may, from time to time, contain information that advertises or promotes, or offers to supply, goods or services of the ASX Group or any third party. Participants may unsubscribe from such newsletters or information at any time by utilising the unsubscribe facility provided in the newsletters.

5. Game order processing          

  1. An order to buy or sell shares may be placed at any time of the day during the Game period. Orders will only be matched during the trading hours of ASX Trade, which are usually 10.00 AM (Sydney time) and 4.12 PM (Sydney time).
  2. Orders in the Game are not executed until they have been matched in ASX Trade.

6. Buying and selling shares in the Game          

Company list

  1. Only shares that are part of the ASX nominated list ('Company List') may be traded.
  2. Each participant will commence the Game with a theoretical AUD$50,000.00 with which to purchase shares. Surplus funds may be left as 'cash-on-hand'. ASXO reserves the right to amend a participant's 'cash-on-hand' funds if any errors occur. However, the ASX Group accepts no liability or responsibility for any loss or damage from any error or the correction thereof.

    Diversification rule
  3. A participant cannot place an order for shares in one particular company which would result in the value of the participant's total holding in that company comprising 25% or more of the participant's total portfolio value. 
  4. This rule is not breached in the event that the share price of a particular company that is already held by the participant increases such that it subsequently results in the company comprising 25% or more of the participant's total portfolio value.

    Daily limit on orders
  5. Participants are limited to placing a total of twenty (20) orders or such other number as the Game coordinator determines, before or during the Game, per trading day ('Daily Limit').The 'Daily Limit' reflects both the buy and sell orders that a participant places.
  6. Once purchased, a security must be held for a minimum of one full trading day before it may be sold.
     
  7. Brokerage
  8. Brokerage will be charged against the trade value on each purchase or sale of stock in the Game at the rate of AUD$15.00 for each trade for orders valued up to and including AUD$15,000.00. For each trade over AUD$15,000.00, brokerage at the rate of 0.1% of the trade value will be charged.
  9. If an order to buy or sell shares is partially filled, brokerage will be charged only on the dollar value of shares that have actually been purchased or sold. Upon the completion of the initial order via a series of partial orders, the Participant will pay no more brokerage than the standard rate as set out above.

7.  Corporate actions

Dividends

  1. Dividends in the Game may not reflect market conditions and participants should refer to dividend information in the Game for reference. Dividends will be added to the Game as they are announced and where feasible at the discretion of the Game administrator and dividends not added to the Game and reflected in the Game dashboard before the ex-dividend date will not be payable retrospectively. 
  2. The dividend amount and payment date reflected in the Game will be deemed correct for the purpose of the Game. Dividends will be calculated automatically and credited to each participant's portfolio after 12:00 AM (Sydney time) of each trading day. 
  3. Dividends will be paid on the date when the shares go 'ex-dividend'. To receive the dividend a participant must already have holdings in those shares at the close of trade the day before the ex-date. 
  4. For dividends in foreign currencies, the dividend amount quoted on asx.com.au the day prior to the ex-dividend date will be paid.

    Adjusted prices vs unadjusted prices
  5. The charting tool available within the Game platform utilises adjusted prices whereas the Game transactions are performed using unadjusted prices. Participants can use the chart functionality as a supporting tool to see overall trend but should not rely on the chart’s prices for shares that have gone through corporate actions adjustments.

8. Leagues

  1. Participants may set up their own league within the Game.
  2. The participant that sets up a league becomes the administrator (‘Administrator’) of that league. The administrator needs to be a member of the league and an active participant. 
  3. Each participant can only be in 5 leagues and can only set up a maximum of 5 leagues.
  4. The maximum number of participants in a league is 200 and to be eligible for prizes at least 60% of its members must be active (refer to Prize Winners 2(b) rule).
  5. Each league administrator is responsible for its own members and for messages sent to league members using Game messaging.
  6. A league administrator may remove a member from a league if that member is sending inappropriate messages using Game messaging.
  7. There are no Game prizes for the top participant in a league additional to any Game prizes that might be awarded.

9.  Prize information

Prize Winners

  1. The prize-winning participants will be determined and declared in accordance with the rules set out in this section. ASXO decisions regarding the prize-winning participants are final and no dialogue will be entered into.
  2. To be eligible for the prizes, the following conditions must be met:
    (a) the participant must have complied with the Game Rules; 
    (b) the participant must have purchased (bought) shares, within the Game, in four (4) different companies over the Game Period. One (1) buy transaction must have been completed by Thursday, 25 July 2024; 
    (c) the participant must not have been disqualified from the Game; and 
    (d) the participant must not have won a '1st, 2nd or 3rd main Game prize' or a 'University Individual prize' in a Public Sharemarket Game previously conducted by ASXO.
  3. Prize-winners agree to participate in any publicity ASXO requires. By accepting a prize, the prize-winners automatically grant to the ASX Group the right to use, or to licence the usage of, their proper name, image, rendition and likenesses for an unlimited period of time without further permission or financial compensation or remuneration to any person, for the purpose of promoting the Game or goods and services provided by the ASX Group.

    Game prizes 
  4. During the course of the Game a monthly prize of $500 will be awarded to the most improved portfolio. The time periods will be the following: Prize 1: 7 March - 4 April, Prize 2: 5 April - 2 May, Prize 3: 3 May - 6 June, Prize 4: 7 June - 4 July, Prize 5: 5 July -1 August, Prize 6: 1 August - 5 September.
  5. At the close of the Game Period, final portfolio values (including 'cash-on-hand' and shares) will be automatically valued using the closing price as stated in the Game on final day of trading, or such other date as ASXO may determine.
  6. ASXO reserves the right to alter this valuation methodology without notice if it determines, in its sole opinion, that the valuation thereby derived is not an accurate or appropriate representation of market value.
  7. There will be three (3) main Game prize-winners – First place (1st), second place (2nd), and third place (3rd). All prize amounts are in Australian dollars and are non-transferable, non-assignable and a non-cash prize alternative will not be provided.(a) the participant with the highest valued Game portfolio at the end of the Game, as determined by ASXO, will be declared the 1st place prize-winner. The 1st place prize-winner will receive a $3,000 cash prize. (b) the participant with the 2nd highest valued Game portfolio at the end of the Game, as determined by ASXO, will be declared the 2nd place prize-winner. The 2nd place prize-winner will receive a $2,000 cash prize. (c) the participant with the 3rd highest valued Game portfolio at the end of the Game, as determined by ASXO, will be declared the 3rd place prize-winner. The 3rd place prize-winner will receive a $1,500 cash prize.
  8. There will be one (1) university individual prize-winner. The prize-winner will receive a $1,500 cash prize. Prize amount is in Australian dollars and is non-transferable, non-assignable and a non-cash prize alternative will not be provided. (a) the university student participant with the highest valued Game portfolio at the end of the Game, as determined by ASXO, will be declared the prize-winner. (b) University student ID will be required to confirm eligibility. (c) If University Student winner is also a main Game prize-winner, only the highest prize will be awarded and the next eligible university student will be awarded the University Individual prize.
  9. Game winners need to be domiciled in Australia and will need to provide details for an Australian bank or financial institution for payment of the prize.

    League prizes
  10. Two league prizes will be awarded. Prize money will be paid to the winning league Administrator. It will be up to the discretion of the winning league Administrator and the league group as to how the prize is disseminated. The prize amount is in Australian dollars and is non-transferable, non-assignable and a non-cash prize alternative will not be provided. ASX takes no responsibility or liability for how the league prize is distributed.
  11. League prize 1 will be awarded to the top league with 10 or fewer active participants. In order to be eligible for prizes the league must have minimum 2 ‘eligible’ and ‘active’ participants. The league with 10 or fewer active participants that has the highest valued league ranking at the end of the Game, as determined by ASXO, will be declared the 10 or under league winner. The winning league will be awarded $1,000. 
  12. League prize 2 will be awarded to the top league with 11 or more active participants. In order to be eligible for prizes the league must have 11 or more ‘eligible’ and ‘active’ participants. The league with 11 or more active participants that has the highest valued league ranking at the end of the Game, as determined by ASXO, will be declared the over 10 league winner. The winning league will be awarded $3,000.

    Tied results
  13. If there is more than one (1) participant holding the highest valued Game portfolio/s, the prize money shall be shared on the following basis:

    (a) In the event of a tie for first place between two (2) participants, first and second prize will be combined and shared between those participants. The next placed participant will be declared third and receive the prize money for third place.
    (b) In the event of a tie for first place between three (3) or more participants, first, second and third prize will be combined and shared between those participants. No participant will be declared second or third.
    (c) In the event of a tie for second place between two (2) or more participants, second and third prize will be combined and shared between those participants. No participant will be declared third.
    (d) In the event of a tie for third place between two (2) or more participants, third prize will be shared between those participants.
    (e) In the event of a tie for University Individual prize between two (2) or more participants, prize will be shared between those participants.
     
  14. The prize-winners will be notified by email or telephone within three (3) days of the declaration of results. They must respond from their registered email address within 48 hours of receiving such notification, and in such response must provide their legal name, residential mailing address, and phone number to be eligible to receive prizes. If any potential prize-winning participant cannot be contacted within three (3) days after notification, or are otherwise deemed ineligible to receive a prize; that participant will not receive the prize, and an alternate participant will be selected according to the standings from all remaining eligible participants. ASXO will also announce the prize-winners of the Game in external communications.
  15. With leagues, if there is more than one (1) league holding the highest ranking in the Game, in their category, the prize money shall be shared equally between leagues.

10. Technical requirements

  1. To join the Game, participants must have a version of Internet Explorer 11 or above.
  2. Browsers must be configured to accept Cookies and enable Java Script. The Game works best on Chrome and Firefox.
  3. The Game may also be accessed on a mobile device provided it meets the technical specifications required.
  4. Participants acknowledge that the security level for their browsers may need to be set to the standard medium level or lower in order to access the Game. Computers installed with Firewall, anti-virus protection or other security protection programs may also require configuration changes in order to access the Game. 
  5. The ASX Group is not obliged to assist with the configuration of individual computer settings or security software.
